July 11, 2005 Newport Beach, CA -- Mindspeed Technologies' M02140 10-Gbit/sec limiting amplifier has been selected for use in Opnext's TRV series of 300-pin transponders and TRE series of Xenpak and X2 modules.

Mindspeed says its integrated high-gain limiting amplifier is a physical media dependent (PMD) product for the 10-Gbit/sec market that offers higher performance at lower cost than earlier Gallium Arsenide (GaAs) devices. The company says its M02140 amplifier offers the size and power efficiency to enable low-cost, hot-pluggable XFP, X2, and Xenpak modules, and supports data rates up to 12.5-Gbit/sec for datacom and telecom optical links in enterprise and public networks.

"We are pleased with the outstanding performance of Mindspeed's M02140 limiting amplifier," remarks Satoshi Aoki, vice president of research and development for Opnext. "Mindspeed's solution helps our modules achieve excellent input sensitivity and jitter tolerance, a key element in offering leading-edge competitive module solutions and securing top-tier design wins."

"Our new, fully-integrated, low-power 10-Gbit/sec limiting amplifier offers our customers a significant price and performance advantage, while facilitating the industry's migration to 100-Gbit/sec," adds Hasnain Bajwa, director of marketing for Mindspeed.

Mindspeed says the M02140 is fully equipped with on-chip programmable features including an output amplitude level and an adjustable signal detect threshold setting. The device also includes a received signal strength indicator (RSSI) and a fully integrated DC-offset cancellation loop that requires no external components. Manufactured using an advanced silicon germanium (SiGe) bipolar complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (BiCMOS) process, the company says the device delivers significantly improved performance over earlier GaAs-based devices, when compared in terms of power, efficiency, and noise reduction.

Rated for operation up to 12.5-Gbit/sec, the M02140 limiting amplifier consumes 185 mW at 3.3 V (typical), with 5.5 mV (typical at 10.3-Gbit/sec) of input sensitivity and 0.8 picoseconds (ps) root mean square (rms) random jitter. With typical output rise/fall times of 23/27 ps, the company says M02140 offers unparalleled performance over a wide, -40°C to +85°C industrial operating temperature range.
