Fiber-optic interconnect supplier US Conec will unveil the MTP-16 multi-fiber optical connector at ECOC in Valenica, Spain this week. The fiber-optic connector offers the highest-density physical contact for multi-fiber applications available, the company asserts.

Based on the company's MT Elite ferrule technology, the MTP-16 fiber-optic connector system is designed for structured cabling that calls for parallel or duplex links with low insertion loss, according to Shelly Buchter, product manager at US Conec. The connectors are designed to efficiently aggregate eight-lane QSFP+/QSFP28 optical transceiver links while directly coupling into 16x25G active devices.

The MTP-16 connector family includes the 16-fiber MT ferrule, connector hardware, and bulkhead adapters. It uses the same external footprint as traditional 12-fiber MT ferrules. The ferrules are available in one or two rows of 16 fibers.

The connector hardware also benefits from a keying feature, being standardized by TIA 604-18 (FOCIS 18) and IEC (61754-7-3) that differs from the centered keying feature on the traditional MPO hardware. The new design ensures proper mating of the MTP-16 connector without inadvertently mating the 16-fiber connector hardware with standard MPO compliant hardware, US Conec explains.

The MTP-16 adapters are available in full or reduced flange mounting and opposed or aligned key orientation.
