Optical fiber developer Hengtong Optic-Electric Co., Ltd. (SH. 600487) says that China Unicom recently conducted successful tests of the company's ultra-low-loss G.654.E fiber on routes in Xinjiang and Shandong, China. The new large effective area fiber has attracted CNY 45.23 million in grant money from the Chinese government, awarded in July 2016.

The test saw the fiber applied on two terrestrial routes, "Hami – Balikun" and "Jinan – Qingdao." Hengtong says the fiber performed well in tests of temperature resistance, attenuation, weldability, and strength properties, as certified by Wang Guangquan, director of the Network Technology Research Department of China Unicom.

Hengtong sees the fiber as applicable to land and marine optical communication and mainline requirements, particularly in applications that must support high-speed transmissions, large capacity, and long distance.
