March 18, 2003-- LightPointe, a San Diego-based manufacturer of optical transmission equipment using free-space optics (FSO) technology, introduced its newest product line for carriers at CeBIT, in Hannover, Germany.

The new product, FlightStrata, is the FSO industry's only multiple-beam tracking system that incorporates multiple transmitters and a receive lens array to address scintillation and temporary path obstructions, according to the company. The system also offers automatic power control and optical beam shaping to provide greater performance under a variety of atmospheric conditions. FlightStrata was developed by LightPointe's international engineering team, which built upon the company's FlightSpectrum product line, which is deployed in several major carriers' networks.

The first commercially available versions of the new system, which will support 52 Mbits/sec and 155 Mbits/sec, will be introduced in the European and the North and South American markets.

The system's proprietary multi-beam array tracking steers four laser beams and a receive lens array as a highly redundant single transceiver source through the air between link heads mounted a top buildings or behind office windows. The product's automatic power control feature adjusts system power output in lower visibility weather conditions and provides higher fade margin over shorter distances. The multi-beam array tracking, in conjunction with optical beam shaping, enables cost- effective and optimal performance of FSO equipment.

LightPointe's family of flight optical transport equipment provides dedicated bandwidth of 10 Mbits/sec, 100 Mbits/sec, 155 Mbits/sec, 622 Mbits/sec, 1.25 Gbits/sec and 2.5 Gbits/sec. The company's customer base in more than 30 countries, includes high-profile enterprise customers and carriers, including Qwest, China Unicom, and China Mobile.

In addition to offices in the United States and Europe, the company maintains offices in Singapore, China, and the United Arab Emirates. LightPointe's U.S. and European manufacturing facilities are ISO 9001 certified.
