28 July 2003 Boulder, CO Lightwave--Picolight Inc., a provider of fiber-optic transceivers for enterprise, storage-area and metro/access networks, announced that the company will begin offering a family of transmit and receive optical sub-components called OEngines. The OEngine product family includes TO-can packaged vertical cavity surface-emitting lasers (VCSELs) and detectors as well as LC sleeve assemblies. The products target 1 to 10-Gbit/sec 850-nm multimode enterprise applications and 100-Mbit/sec to 4-Gbit/sec 1310-nm singlemode access applications.

Picolight manufactures optical sub-components internally using proprietary technology and ISO 9001 certified processes. OEngine sub-components are used in Picolight transceiver modules. More than 2 million OEngine sub-components have been sold.

"Picolight's entry into opto sub-components is a natural extension of our leadership in transceiver modules, which in turn is built on our pioneering development of vertical cavity lasers," said Stan Swirhun, Picolight's chief executive officer. "By commercializing OEngines, Picolight will provide our customers access to a proven, patented and comprehensive product portfolio for 850 and 1310-nm optics front ends -- critical for the emerging 4-Gbit/sec and 10-Gbit/sec markets."

The components business unit is ISO-9001 certified and has manufactured fiber-optic components since 1999. Sales to both transceiver and communications systems suppliers seeking embedded optics are targeted. Initial OEngine products are available immediately in TO-can, SC- and LC-sleeve assemblies.
