Menara Networks will unveil a pair of products at OFC/NFOEC this week. They include the company’s latest “System-in-a-Module,” which is a multifunction tunable 100G OTN CFP pluggable optical transceiver, as well as the Armada 1000-GM, a 1RU 100G WDM transport platform.

The MSA-compliant module integrates OTU4 framing, ultra forward error correction (FEC), full C-band tunability, and 100 Gigabit Ethernet (100GbE) performance monitoring. It maps a 100GbE payload into an ITU G.709 compliant OTU4 frame while providing non-intrusive monitoring of the Ethernet frame statistics. The ITU G.975.1 compliant FEC offers configurable coding gain up to 9.4 dB for use over amplified DWDM systems.

The OTU4 signal is then transmitted using optical duo-binary signal (ODB) modulation over four optical channels on the ITU 50-GHz grid. Each of the four channels can be independently tuned over any of the 102 channels on the C-Band grid.

The CFP also has a PRBS line performance checker/generator, an set of OTU4 performance monitoring points and alarms, and an integrated OTN SNMP MIB accessible through the front Ethernet faceplate. At least one Tier 1 system vendor has ordered the module, Menara reveals.

Meanwhile, the Armada 1000-GM offers 100G transponder and 10G/40G muxponder functions within a tunable CFP-based OTU4 100G uplink. The platform also includes integrated EDFAs and dispersion compensating modules. Menara will target the Armada 1000-GM at metro and data center interconnection applications.

“There is an expected sharp growth of DWDM traffic in metro networks driven largely by data center-to-data center interconnection,” says Eve Griliches, vice president of optical networking at ACG Research. “The coherent 100G solutions currently deployed in the core of the networks do not meet the cost or the power consumption points commensurate with this market just yet and Menara’s integrated solution effectively addresses this market need.”
