Metro-Optix selects Agere's chips to build third-generation metro optical network equipment

April 9, 2001
Apr/ 9, 2001--Agere Systems announced that Metro-Optix has selected a suite of Agere's networking integrated circuits, systems-on-chip and optoelectronic components for use in Metro-Optix's CityStream platform.

Agere Systems (NYSE: AGR.A) announced that Metro-Optix has selected a suite of Agere's networking integrated circuits (IC), systems-on-chip (SoC) and optoelectronic components for use in Metro-Optix's CityStream platform, a "protocol-agile" bandwidth management product that will help speed the transition of traditional circuit-based networks to next-generation, high-performance cell- and packet-based services over optical networks.

Metro-Optix currently deploys Agere's network SoC and optoelectronic components in CityStream, targeted to service providers including Internet service providers as well as long-distance, regional and local telecommunications carriers. With Agere's chips at the heart of CityStream, Metro-Optix can offer a scalable, multi-protocol, multi-service solution with combined voice, Internet and other data services. The company will also be able to begin volume shipments much earlier and faster than expected.

CityStream includes the following Agere products. All of the devices are built with Agere's CMOS technology and extensive library of IP cores and macrocells:

* TADM/TSOT: OC48 add/drop multiplexer SoC

* SuperMapper: Integrated framer/mapper/multiplexer SoC

* APC/ASX: Asynchronous transfer mode SoC

* ASICs: Custom application-specific integrated circuits

* Optical transponders and transceivers
