Santur delivers tunable lasers, modules for 40/100G transport networks

SEPTEMBER 2, 2008 -- Santur has developed narrow-linewidth, low phase noise, high-power DFB array-based widely tunable lasers--characteristics that support the efficient transition of networks to 40- and 100-Gbit/sec rates by enabling advanced modulation techniques with coherent detection.

SEPTEMBER 2, 2008 -- Santur Corporation (search for Santur), manufacturer of high-performance tunable devices for the global telecommunications industry, today announced the availability of narrow linewidth, low phase noise, and high-power DFB array-based widely tunable lasers. Such characteristics enable the efficient transition of networks to 40- and 100-Gbit/sec rates by enabling advanced modulation techniques with coherent detection, report company representatives. In these applications, a DFB offers a number of benefits over other approaches due to the stability, ease of use, and lack of low frequency jitter associated with mechanical resonances.

The new tunable lasers complement Santur's existing portfolio of tunable transmitters and modules. Similar to its approach at 10 Gbits/sec, Santur says it is developing a portfolio of 40- and 100-Gbit/sec products with tunability and flexibility to support diverse modulation schemes.

"This is a particularly significant step for our industry because these types of specifications previously were only the domain of more complex external cavity devices," reports Bardia Pezeshki, CTO of Santur. "Now there is a more robust DFB-based solution that is intrinsically easier to use. In addition to providing the standard pre-calibrated modules with electronics, the simplicity of our technology allows our customers to buy at the lower cost butterfly level and adapt it for their application without fear of mode-hops or cavity instabilities," he says.

Santur is providing customers with devices rated at 30mW and 40mW optical power, typical linewidth of 250 KHz, and instantaneous linewidth of about 100 KHz. The lasers are widely tunable over the C- or L-band and are available in butterfly or module form factors. Santur claims its lasers offer unprecedented cost advantage and carrier-proven DFB robustness to enable system integrators to upgrade to higher line rates by adding a new linecard to currently installed equipment while maintaining network stability and architecture.
