FEBRUARY 28, 2008 -- The new 40-Gbyte transponder module for the Tellabs (search for Tellabs) 7100 optical transport system is a fully integrated upgrade that allows 4x more traffic to travel through a provider's network, says the company. It also gives providers the ability to increase the bandwidth available on their existing networks without extensive network redesign or reconfiguration.

According to the company, the 40-Gbyte transponder plugs into a network's existing Tellabs 7100 OTS switches, resulting in a 300% increase in capacity. Through this upgrade, the OTS delivers an increase in bandwidth from 440 Gbytes to 1.76 Tbytes, preparing networks to offer HDTV, video-on-demand, and high-speed Internet access.

The Tellabs 7100 OTS and the 40-Gbyte transponder module give providers the necessary hardware to build broadband capacity into networks. The Tellabs 7100 OTS is currently available; the transponder module will be available in June 2008.
