MARCH 17, 2009 -- Vitesse Semiconductor Corp. has announced the VSC8479-01, which it touts as the only 10G transceiver IC to support both burst- and continuous-mode operation required for 10G EPON FTTH system deployments.

MARCH 17, 2009 -- Vitesse Semiconductor Corp. (search Lightwave for Vitesse) has announced the VSC8479-01, which it touts as the only 10G transceiver IC to support both burst- and continuous-mode operation required for 10G EPON FTTH system deployments.

"The VSC8479-01 is the latest generation of Vitesse's popular VSC8479 product family. It is the first 10G transceiver to meet and exceed the 10G EPON IEEE P802.3av/D3.0 Draft standard for burst-mode performance," said Gary Paules, product marketing manager for Vitesse. "It provides the high-performance functionality as well as the small size needed for this challenging application at a cost-effective price point."

The new VSC8479-01 supports both XFI and SFI module interfaces, making it suitable for both XFP and SFP+ host applications. The 12x12-mm package size enables increased port counts and higher densities on the system host card, the company says.

In addition to 10G-EPON system applications, the VSC8479-01 supports data rates ranging from 9.95 Gbps to 11.35 Gbps for multi-rate applications including 10-Gigabit Ethernet, 10G Fibre Channel, OC-192 SONET/SDH, and OTN. Jitter generation of 40-mUI pk-to-pk provides signal quality performance for improved link margin in all applications, the company adds.

Additionally, the device has a full suite of BIST functions and support collateral, such as various evaluation card configurations depending on the target application.
