Transition Networks delivers 24-port Gigabit fiber access switch

OCTOBER 23, 2009 -- Transition Networks Inc., a supplier of fiber access technology and a wholly owned subsidiary of Communications Systems Inc., has introduced a new, carrier-class 24-port Gigabit fiber access switch. The switch has been designed with operations, administration, and maintenance (OAM) capabilities to ease the management of delivering Carrier Ethernet and/or triple play services.

"Service providers are constantly looking for cost-effective ways to deliver more services and bandwidth to customers while maintaining service-level agreements (SLAs)," says Patrick Schaber, director of marketing at Transition Networks. "The SM24-1000SFP-AH switch fits nicely into service providers' overall strategy because of its cost, 10G uplinks, and rich feature set."

The SM24-1000SFP-AH is a 1.5-U form factor consisting of 24 1000Base-X SFP ports, two 10G XFP uplink ports, and two expansion slots for two additional XFP modules. The SFP and XFP ports accept industry-standard optical transceivers. The switch has a standard operating temperature of -20° to +65°C and has hot-swappable redundant AC or DC power supplies.

The device also includes Carrier Ethernet specific software, quality-of-service (QoS), and mManagement features that enable service providers to deliver secure services while checking end-to-end connectivity for customers.

Feature enhancements such as 802.3ah, Q-in-Q, carrier-class rate limiting, QoS, 9K jumbo frame support, and subscriber isolation are added to help service providers deploy and securely manage the network services they are delivering. To achieve this, Private VLAN, DHCP Snooping, and IP Source Guard are incorporated. The device also offers Storm Control Protection and Port Security to protect it from unwanted attacks and to ensure the switch CPU performs optimally.

To ensure only valid traffic is allowed through the switch, the SM24-1000SFP-AH includes IEEE 802.1x and L2/L3/L4 ACL rules to control traffic and validate the traffic going through the switch.

To help service providers isolate, maintain, and manage network traffic, the SM24-1000SFP-AH comes with industry-standard 802.3ah Link OAM capabilities to assist with fault resolution and network management.

The SM24-1000SFP-AH switch will be generally available for shipping in December 2009.
