Tektronix announces a compact optical test system

March 13, 2001
Mar. 13, 2001--Tektronix, Inc., a provider of test, measurement and monitoring equipment for telecom network equipment manufacturers and operators, announced a portable multi-channel optical test system for 10 Gigabits per second (Gb/s) SONET/SDH testing and analysis.

Tektronix, Inc. (NYSE: TEK), a provider of test, measurement and monitoring equipment for telecom network equipment manufacturers and operators, announced a portable multi-channel optical test system for 10 Gigabits per second (Gb/s) SONET/SDH testing and analysis. The new product allows technical personnel to conduct field testing more efficiently when installing new optical equipment and carrying out routine maintenance procedures.

The new OTS9030 Optical Test System is a compact, five-slot portable chassis that uses modules from the proven OTS product family, an established Tektronix platform for engineering and manufacturing test of optical network products. The OTS9030 chassis is compatible across-the-board with other OTS family modules, software, test programs, and operational procedures.

Network operators driven by time-to-market and Quality of Service (QoS) pressures are turning to equipment manufacturers to install new optical system elements such as transmitters, switches, and multiplexers. Onsite customer acceptance procedures require the installation team to prove (by means of a series of measurements and verification tests) that the new elements comply with agreed-upon standards. This multi-channel capable solution mirrors compliance and testing done at the factory.

The OTS9030's five-slot chassis addresses the need for a portable field tool that can deliver the same performance and repeatable results that factory-based measurement equipment provides. The OTS9030 shares the same modules used throughout the OTS product family, a proven Tektronix platform that includes both transmit and receive elements. If a manufacturer uses an OTS9000 rack-mounted chassis system in its engineering department, for example, it can use identical modules in the OTS9030 with no loss of performance. This makes it easy to reconcile an optical element's pre-shipment specifications with its actual performance in the field.

Like its companions in the OTS product family, the OTS9030, when suitably configured, allows simultaneous multiple-channel testing and can perform multiple tests simultaneously. This maximizes the instrument's throughput (productivity), whether it is used in engineering, manufacturing, or field installation applications.

The Tektronix OTS product family is a flexible, modular card architecture designed for applications that require minimum down time, such as manufacturing and long-term network testing. With three chassis types available -- the OTS9000, a 14-slot rack-mounted system; the OTS9010, an 8-slot bench-top system, and now the OTS9030 5-slot -- users can configure diverse combinations of transmit and receive test modules for 10 Gb/s SONET/SDH testing. Appropriately configured systems in the OTS product family can test multiple channels and run multiple tests simultaneously, reducing test times.

The Tektronix OTS9030 will be available for order beginning March 19,2000 with an eight week delivery from receipt of order. Pricing starts at $15,000.
