Sycamore and Utfors connect Stockholm and Helsinki

May 21, 2001
May 21, 2001--Sycamore Networks, a provider of intelligent optical networking, and Utfors AB, a pan-Nordic carrier, have lit, according to schedule, a major network segment that connects Stockholm, Sweden and Helsinki, Finland with Sycamore's SN 10000 ultra long-haul transport platform.

Sycamore Networks (NASDAQ: SCMR), a provider of intelligent optical networking, and Utfors AB, a pan-Nordic carrier, have lit, as planned, a major network segment that connects Stockholm, Sweden and Helsinki, Finland with Sycamore's SN 10000 ultra long-haul transport platform. Utfors announced the opening of the route, which spans major metropolitan and regional sites throughout the Nordic region. The Utfors network will offer services such as fixed telephony, LAN-to-LAN interconnect and broadband Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) to its corporate and residential customer base.

The Stockholm to Helsinki route makes a stop on the island of Uto and is part of a 7,000-km broadband network Utfors is building throughout Scandinavia. Leveraging innovations in IP, Ethernet and optical networking, Utfors' network architecture is specifically designed to enable the deployment of multiple services over a single, cost-optimized network infrastructure. Utfors chose to deploy the SN 10000 with the Raman amplification option because it enabled them to bridge this route without the need for costly optical-to-electrical-to-optical (OEO) regeneration. This is the first commercial deployment of the SN 10000, which is Sycamore Network's high-capacity intelligent transport platform designed to span distances of up to 4,000 km.

Sycamore Networks' intelligent transport solutions reduce the capital and operation costs of deploying long-haul and ultra long-haul network applications by eliminating complex network elements and streamlining the deployment of new services. Optimized to support high-capacity wave counts over longer distances, the SN 10000 can support up to 1.6 terabits of capacity. The SN 10000 platform offers carriers a wide range of service interfaces, ranging from Gigabit Ethernet through STM-64c/OC-192c. Additionally, the SN 10000 can be non-disruptively upgraded to STM-256/OC-768 to meet future customer requirements.
