Philips Kommunikations AG, Nuremberg, Germany, has installed a 10-gigabit-per-second synchronous digital hierarchy transfer system in Nuremberg that can transfer 120,000 telephone calls via a standard singlemode fiber. The signals can be transmitted over more than 100 kilometers with distributed feedback lasers, electro-absorption modulators, optical semiconductor amplifiers and erbium-doped fiber amplifiers. The transmitter/receiver assembly groups, as well as the optical amplifiers, can be integrated into the Philips synchronous digital hierarchy multiplex transfer system.
