Bookham releases 80% smaller 600-mW pump laser module

MARCH 13, 2009 -- Bookham says its latest pump module reduces package size and power consumption for amplifier designers.

MARCH 13, 2009 -- Optical component manufacturer Bookham (search Lightwave for Bookham) has launched what is says is the industry's first cooled small-form-factor Mini-DIL pump laser module. The wavelength-locked, singlemode pump module is capable of delivering more than 600 mW of power.

The module delivers the functionality of a 14-pin butterfly pump in an 80% smaller package while reducing power consumption by 10%. Amplifier designers will be able to reduce the size of low-noise EDFAs, DWDM amplifiers, amplifier modules, and cable TV amplifiers. Bookham expects the module will be key for telecom equipment vendors seeking to lower overall system energy consumption and reduce running costs due to rising utility prices and increased environmental pressures.

The module has an operating temperature range of -20 to +75 degrees, is Telcordia and RoHS compliant, and utilizes the same scalable base alignment technology as the company's other telecom pump lasers. The 600-mW module incorporates the Bookham G08 chip, which has achieved a combined total of more than 300 million field hours.

"This major size reduction allows telecom equipment vendors to save real estate within amplifiers and line cards, and to reduce the size and running costs of the facilities that house them," says Mark Ives, director of product management. "The potential energy and cost savings enabled by this development will be hugely disruptive."

The 600-mW Mini-DIL pump module is available for customer samples immediately and will reach full qualification by the end of 1Q09.
