CIENA Corp. (Linthicum, MD) announced that GST Telecommunications Inc. (Vancouver, WA)) is the first carrier to optically integrate its long-haul network with portions of its local network using CIENA`s MultiWave Sentry and MultiWave Firefly dense wavelength-division multiplexing (DWDM) systems. CIENA`s DirectConnect technology enables GST to do the integration optically and without the use of Synchronous Optical Network/Synchronous Digital Hierarchy (sonet/sdh) multiplexers or regenerators. GST recently turned up 13 cities on its VITA network, which combines voice and data onto a single networking platform.
