EXFO unveils software suite for remote QoS Ethernet testing

The company says the software suite enhances remote testing and commissioning capabilities for Ethernet services through the in-band remote control of ADC's Ethernet Network Interface Units (ENIUs).

April 25, 2005 Quebec City, Canada -- EXFO Electro-Optical Engineering has introduced a new software suite for its FTB-8510/IQS-8510 Packet Blazer 10/100/1000-Mbit/sec Ethernet test modules. The company says the software suite enhances remote testing and commissioning capabilities for Ethernet services through the in-band remote control of ADC's Ethernet Network Interface Units (ENIUs).

EXFO and ADC, a supplier of global network infrastructure platforms enabling the delivery of high-speed Internet, data, video, and voice services, signed an alliance in December to provide integrated remote Ethernet testing platforms for service providers operating metro Ethernet networks.

"On the strength of our alliance with ADC, our combined Packet Blazer/ENIU test solution is creating a strong level of interest with numerous service providers on a global basis," claims Benoit Fleury, EXFO's vice-president of protocol-layer product management. "This unique test solution, based on IEEE's EFM standard, delivers a compelling value proposition to our customers since it eliminates expensive truck rolls, and assures superior quality of service."

The remote ENIU test platform is available in a field-portable, battery-operated format (FTB-8510) as well as in a tabletop or rack-mounted unit (IQS-8510). The FTB/IQS-8510 Packet Blazer, an interchangeable test module housed inside EXFO's FTB-400 Universal Test System (UTS) and IQS-500 Intelligent Test System (ITS), is ideally suited for field and central office applications, according to the companies.

According to a press release, the Packet Blazer module brings service-level agreement verification to Ethernet-based packet services, testing Ethernet connectivity across formats including 10/100/1000BaseT, 1000BaseSX, 1000BaseLX and 1000BaseZX for LAN-to-LAN services delivered via ATM, frame relay, next-generation SONET/SDH, switched Ethernet, VLANs, dark fiber, WDM, and other means. The Packet Blazer module also features EXFO's patent pending EtherBERT technology which provides bit-error-rate testing of Gigabit Ethernet interfaces. The technology is mostly used for WDM testing to assess quality of transmission, according to the release.

The Packet Blazer FTB-8510 Ethernet test module and ADC's ENIU will be on display at booth 2074 at the Networld+Interop convention held May 3-5 at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas.
