DECEMBER 16, 2009 -- JDSU (Nasdaq: JDSU; and TSX: JDU) has announced J-Mentor, which the company asserts is the industry's first portable, expert diagnostic and post-capture analysis tool. J-Mentor is available for the JDSU T-BERD/MTS-6000A Multi Services Application Module (MSAM) and T-BERD/MTS-8000 platform.
J-Mentor saves hours of troubleshooting time for expert and novice network technicians as well as engineers by applying best test practices to problem identification and by recommending the most common solutions, JDSU says.
After using a T-BERD/MTS capture/decode feature set to capture traffic on 10-Mbps to 10-Gbps Ethernet interfaces, J-Mentor uses standard .pcap formatted capture files to identify common problems that affect SLAs such as half-duplex ports, excessive TCP retransmissions, and top IP talkers that may excessively use network bandwidth. With J-Mentor guidance, a more experienced user can quickly make network changes to clear up the most common problems, JDSU says. Conversely, a less experienced user benefits by having the information and recommendations needed to resolve the most common problems before involving a senior technician.
"JDSU recently introduced capture/decode to enable better visibility into network problems and reduce the complexity and costs of managing Carrier Ethernet networks," said Jim Nerschook, vice president and general manager in JDSU's Communications Test and Measurement business segment. "J-Mentor takes the process to the next level by providing an expert tool to empower all users, from novice to expert, with the information needed to fix problems on their own and more efficiently manage network troubles."
J-Mentor is designed to expedite Carrier Ethernet troubleshooting in the network by building on the capture/decode feature set. Traditionally, a technician with advanced IP troubleshooting skill is dispatched to a location with test equipment and a PC for analysis to resolve a problem. With capture/decode, the same technician can perform a packet capture and then analyze the file on the test set itself, according to JDSU. Furthermore, J-Mentor provides users with an expert tool to resolve the simplest problems themselves, thus obviating the need to involve a senior expert at all, the company adds. If J-Mentor does not identify the problem, the tool’s Wireshark protocol analysis capability is still available for more in-depth analysis.
