SEPTEMBER 18, 2007 — EXFO Electro-Optical Engineering Inc. (Québec) released an added feature for its line of optical spectrum analyzers (OSAs), enabling service providers to deploy ROADM-based optical networks. The software product provides in-band optical signal-to-noise ratio (OSNR) measurements and noise levels.

Live agile networks, designed with reconfigurable optical add-drop multiplexers (ROADMs), optimize the distribution of bandwidth, EXFO claims. Since each channel can pass through a different route, optical amplifier and add-drop filter, adjacent channels may host different noise levels. This testing technique was developed to perform accurate signal and noise measurements in all type of networks, from legacy to ROADM-based architectures. All EXFO OSAs in the field can be upgraded to ROADM-readiness with this software package as well.
