Greenlee Communications launches FI-100 fiber identifier

Professional tool provider Greenlee Communications has released the new FI-100 Fiber Identifier, designed to quickly and efficiently measure the presence and direction of traffic in fiber-optic cables and display the approximate core power on the seven-segment display.

Professional tool provider Greenlee Communications has released the new FI-100 Fiber Identifier, designed to quickly and efficiently measure the presence and direction of traffic in fiber-optic cables and display the approximate core power on the seven-segment display.

“The Greenlee Fiber Identifier FI-100 can measure the approximate core power and direction of travel of signals in fiber optic cables by introducing a macrobend,” explained Thieu Do, Greenlee Communications fiber product manager. “This is very useful because the technician is able to determine if a fiber is carrying potentially critical traffic before they disconnect that fiber.”

The FI-100 can be used in conjunction with a laser source to trace fibers using the tone detect. It will not place the fiber link being measured into an alarm condition because the macrobend does not create a large insertion loss. The FI-100 tone detect can be used to uniquely identify fiber cables when used in conjunction with a compatible laser source

The easy-to-operate FI-100 identifies fiber with tone detect has a clear indication of signal transmission direction. It supports all common fiber types including 250 μm, 900 μm, 2 mm, and 3 mm and is able to sense light in bend-insensitive fibers. A laser source is connected to one end of the fiber and a 270-Hz, 1-kHz, or 2-kHz tone is activated on the laser source.
