Equinix, Inc. (NASDAQ:EQIX) says it will open an Equinix Internet Exchange in Helsinki, Finland during the first quarter of 2017. The new exchange complements the six data centers the company currently operates in the Helsinki metropolitan area.

Equinix says its global Platform Equinix interconnection platform comprises more than 145 data centers. The Equinix Internet Exchange accommodates 5.6 terabits of peak traffic, an amount currently growing at more 35% per year, at 22 Internet Exchange Point (IXP) locations in 19 markets across APAC, North America, and Europe. More than 1,300 networks and cloud and content providers use the internet exchange platform to peer worldwide, the company asserts.

The new internet exchange will offer 2.4 Tbps of capacity, Equinix says. The Finnish data center, meanwhile, offer a range of interconnection options. This includes access to the new Cinia submarine cable system, C-Lion1, which runs between Finland and Germany (see "Cinia completes C-Lion1 submarine network, selects optical transport supplier"). The submarine network offers a connectivity bridge among Russia, the Baltic countries, and network nodes in Central Europe. The undersea cable systems has 144 Tbps and round trip rate of less than 20 ms between Helsinki and Frankfurt.

"The growth and rapid evolution of the digital economy demands ever-increasing levels of network performance and capacity. Equinix will help address this challenge by opening the Equinix Internet Exchange in Helsinki, which will build on the success we've had developing Internet Exchanges in Zurich and Paris," explained Eric Schwartz, president EMEA, Equinix. "This, combined with the power of Platform Equinix, will enable businesses in Finland to meet their global digital transformation objectives and optimize digital relationships."
