Shaw Communications (TSX:SJR.B) announced plans to open a new data center in Calgary to offer business customers a variety of hybrid solutions, including cloud, colocation, managed services or combinations thereof.

The 40,000-square-foot facility is Shaw's first Canadian data center initiative following its 2014 acquisition of Denver-based ViaWest. The Calgary data center will open in the fall of 2015.

The Calgary data center leverages ViaWest's expertise in the United States, where it operates 28 data centers with more than 1,500 customers. U.S.-based customers of ViaWest can also leverage the Calgary data center to meet their Canadian IT hybrid infrastructure needs.

The Calgary data center will be carrier-neutral and allow businesses to use Shaw's fiber network, a carrier of their choice, or a combination of both.
