Australia's National Broadband Network (NBN) has begun rolling out DOCSIS 3.1 technology from ARRIS (NASDAQ:ARRS). ARRIS and NBN plan to bring DOCSIS 3.1 to 3 million premises in major Australian cities by 2020.

NBN and ARRIS previously collaborated on the NBN broadband access network's existing DOCSIS 3.0 hybrid fiber/coax (HFC) infrastructure.

"NBN Co. has worked hard on the introduction of DOCSIS 3.1 onto the HFC network, and we are very proud to be able to launch the technology onto the network with our HFC technology partner ARRIS," said Ray Owen, chief technology officer at NBN. "This is another example of NBN Co. using world-leading technology to deliver a better experience for Australians on the NBN broadband access network. DOCSIS 3.1 will not only double the capacity of the NBN Co. HFC network, but it will also help us deliver a more stable and resilient service for end-users with the advanced technologies that it uses."

"We've partnered closely with NBN Co. to reach its goal of achieving universal connectivity through a scalable network architecture. The launch of its DOCSIS 3.1 initiative is an important milestone that will benefit all end-users on the NBN network," said Dan Whalen, president, network and cloud, ARRIS. "Our collaboration continues to demonstrate that HFC has a strong future. The DOCSIS 3.1 upgrade underscores the network's extensibility in meeting today's demand for additional capacity and new services. We will work with NBN Co. to leverage this advanced network infrastructure to enable Australia's digital future."

The deployment will include ARRIS network technology, customer premises equipment (CPE) and the company's Global Services organization. Throughput on each node is designed to be 3.3 Gbps.

Specific ARRIS products to be deployed include: the E6000 Gen 2 CCAP, OM4100 OptiMax 4x4 segmentable nodes, ServeAssure NXT management platform and CM8200B DOCSIS 3.1 cable modems. The company's Global Services organization will support the planning, design, implementation, and operation of the network and business processes.
