Videotron has inked an agreement with Comcast (NASDAQ:CMCSA) to develop and deliver an IPTV service based on Comcast's cloud-based X1 video platform.

Since its launch in 2012, X1 and services based on it have deployed with a number of operators besides Comcast, including Canadian MSOs Shaw Communications and Rogers Communications, as well as Cox Communications in the States. The entertainment operating system (OS) won an Emmy in 2014 and is deployed across Comcast's footprint. It uses technologies from multiple vendors, including video processing from AWS Elemental, set-top SoCs from Broadcom and voice-activated remote controls from Universal Electronics.

"We are very pleased with our decision to choose this state-of-the-art platform," said Manon Brouillette, president and CEO of Videotron. "Combined with the power of Videotron's network and its rich array of content, it will enable us to continue offering our customers the best possible experience and will strengthen our technology leadership."

Tony Werner, president of Technology and Product for Comcast Cable, said: "XFINITY X1 continues to be a game-changer, allowing millions of people to search and navigate live TV, on demand movies and shows, web video, apps and more in a simple, fast and intuitive way. The platform has changed the experience of watching video and our partnership with Videotron will extend X1's reach to even more users."
