Windstream (NASDAQ:WIN) is expanding its gigabit Internet service in Lincoln, NE, to nearly triple the number of households and businesses with access to 1 Gbps speeds to more than 7,800 households.

"Lincoln continues to be a growing hub for many residents, entrepreneurs, small business owners and startups, and we are proud to be the first provider to bring 1-Gig to Lincoln and help strengthen the connection in the community during such a critical time," said Jeff Small, president of consumer and small business at Windstream.

Windstream's Lincoln network is built on a 100G fiber backbone that connects the entire community through diverse and redundant paths to the company's core network. Windstream also hosts several 160 TB servers locally for Internet steaming content providers and search engines.

"We have invested significantly in developing a one-of-a-kind network capable of supporting the growing needs of the Lincoln community," said Small. "We're seeing growing demand for our services from residents, small business owners and content providers who need access to the most advanced Internet networks available. This expansion offers Windstream customers even faster downloads and more reliable streaming video, while enabling businesses to better meet the growing demands of big data and optimize the use of cloud technologies and services to suit their needs."

Earlier this week, Windstream launched gigabit Internet service in several north Georgia service areas.
