Siemens to integrate OMM MEMS switch into long-haul DWDM system

    March 12, 2002--Siemens Information and Communication Networks Inc. announced that it finalized qualification of OMM Inc.'s micro electromechanical systems (MEMS) for its Optisphere MTS Multi-Haul DWDM product line.

    March 12, 2002--Siemens Information and Communication Networks Inc. (www.usa.siemens.com) announced that it finalized qualification of OMM Inc.'s (www.omminc.com) micro electromechanical systems (MEMS) for its Optisphere MTS Multi-Haul DWDM product line.

    Siemens uses OMM's Telcordia-certified two-dimensional MEMS technology in its latest optical crossconnect product. The company is working to integrate the MEMS technology into its MTS Transparent Networking platform.

    "As the volume and volatility of network usage increases, it becomes even more important for service providers to make the most efficient use of bandwidth possible," said Quoc Nguyen, general manager of the Siemens U.S. optical business and the Optisphere product line. "Using all-optical switching and routing will help optimize our customers' networks in terms of scalability, flexibility, and cost-efficiency."

    The Siemens Infinity MTS 2 Multi-haul DWDM system is designed on an open platform for increased bandwidth and cost efficiency. It is flexible and modular, allowing terabit transmission with the same amplifier platform using technologies such as Raman amplification, enhanced link control, and optical add/drop multiplexing. Currently, the Optisphere MTS can transmit up to 160 wavelengths at 10 Gbits/sec or 640 wavelengths at 2.5 Gbits/sec. The next release of the system is expected to transport 80 wavelengths at 40 Gbits/sec.
