March 28, 2003--WaveSmith Networks has announced a multi-year contract with SBC Services Inc. for its DN 7100 multiservice switch, which will be used for DSL aggregation across 200 nationwide sites. The deal marks a significant win for WaveSmith and demonstrates the immediate value proposition its Distributed Node (DN) multiservice switch platform brings to incumbent carriers, say company representatives.

In a reduced capital-spending environment, carriers are closely examining the Return on Investment (ROI) of any new telecommunications equipment they deploy. WaveSmith claims its products provide scalable, cost effective growth paths that can allow carriers to more efficiently roll out DSL to their customers.

"We are very proud to have won this business with SBC. With this win, WaveSmith enters its next phase as a revenue-generating vendor," contends Tom Burkardt, chairman, president, and chief executive officer of WaveSmith Networks. "The win is due to the entire team's effort in developing a product that relieves real carrier pain today, and a flexible platform to build on in the future."

The WaveSmith DN multiservice platform combines ATM, Frame Relay, Time-Division
Multiplexing/Circuit Emulation Services (TDM/CES), and Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS) in an ultra-compact form factor while delivering telephony-grade reliability, says the company. The DN's WaveForm architecture supports any mix of multiservice edge and core networking technologies, enabling a migration that leverages existing infrastructure without a forklift upgrade. The DN 2100 and DN 4100 are optimized for remote edge and medium density edge applications while the DN 7100 is geared towards Central Office switching.
