18 December 2003 Frankfurt, Germany Lightwave Europe -- German telecommunications provider T-Com, the fixed network division of Deutsche Telekom, has selected Nortel Networks as one of its key suppliers for metro optical network equipment.
The agreement calls for Nortel Networks to supply T-Com with products from the OPTera Metro 5000 Multiservice Platform series. Designed to help deliver broadband information services to businesses, the OPTera Metro 5000 provides high-capacity telecommunications backbones over distances of up to a few hundred kilometres. The OPTera Metro 5000 series supports a wide range of services--including storage networking, video, Gigabit Ethernet, and most other broadband network protocols-using WDM technology.
As the largest service provider in the largest enterprise market in Europe, T-Com already operates as a full provider of IT and telecommunications services to approximately 440,000 businesses.
The OPTera Metro 5000 series assists in maximizing the power of WDM to transparently deliver high-bandwidth network services across an open, scalable, survivable optical transport platform, explain Nortel representatives. In addition, it can enable service providers to offer enterprise customers high-speed data services for key areas like storage area networking, disaster recovery, and server consolidation.
OPTera Metro 5000 also provides a robust solution for Fortune 500 customers facing the challenge of creating a highly resilient and scalable transmission network to support remote storage and business continuity.
Using DWDM, OPTera Metro 5000 can transfer up to 320 Gbits/sec of information--or roughly the equivalent of 15 feature-length films, says the company. Large capacity transfer is vital on communications backbones and in mission critical applications like storage area networking, grid computing, business continuity, and disaster recovery.
For less bandwidth-intense needs, OPTera Metro 5000 offers coarse WDM (CWDM) as a cost-effective method of providing individual broadband connections or multiple services through up to eight wavelengths. OPTera Metro 5000 offers networking capabilities from simple, point-to-point CWDM to multi-ring networks in mixed DWDM/CWDM environments.
