TRW launches new company to provide telecommunications products

May 1, 2001
May 1, 2001--TRW announced the creation of Velocium, a new company that will provide very high-speed indium phosphide (InP) and gallium arsenide (GaAs) components and other products for fiber optic and wireless telecommunications systems.

TRW (NYSE:TRW) announced the creation of Velocium, a new company that will provide very high-speed indium phosphide (InP) and gallium arsenide (GaAs) components and other products for fiber optic and wireless telecommunications systems.

TRW's history of developing and manufacturing InP products has provided an increase of communications bandwidth, and a reduction in power requirements for key wireless applications. TRW has built a production facility using 4-inch InP wafers, which enables cost-competitive InP components at high volume. The company also recently demonstrated 80 gigahertz digital circuits.

TRW's InP components for fiber optic transmission systems and next-generation mobile handsets are available in high volume. Initial product lines include integrated photoreceivers, modulator drivers and amplifiers for fiber optic systems operating at rates of 40 gigabits per second (Gbps) and above, as well as high-performance InP power amplifiers for 2.5G and 3G wireless handsets.

The first of Velocium's InP products is a 40 Gbps OC-768 integrated photoreceiver, which will be available in volume quantities beginning this month. Additional OC-768 and OC-192 products will be available in volume quantities by this summer. TRW's InP technology allows improved high-speed operation in fiber optic networks and provides an integration platform for optoelectronics.

Velocium's power amplifier products for wireless networks will be available in volume quantities in 2002. These products will provide power efficiency, significantly extending battery life for next-generation mobile wireless devices. Velocium's product lines also will include TRW's current commercial GaAs components for fiber optic and wireless communications.
