ElectroniCast: Telecom dominates PLC splitter market

Oct. 11, 2011
PON, FTTx, and other telecom network applications are the dominant markets for planar lightwave circuit (PLC) splitters, accounting for 76% relative market share of compact devices in 2011, according to the latest report from ElectroniCast Consultants.

PON, FTTx, and other telecom network applications are the dominant markets for planar lightwave circuit (PLC) splitters, accounting for 76% relative market share of compact devices in 2011, according to the latest report from ElectroniCast Consultants.

The next largest market is the cable TV segment, followed by PLC splitters used in test and measurement applications, then harsh environment (military, aerospace, and industrial), and finally private enterprise/local area networks (LANs).

However, markets other than telecom will show the strongest growth. "PLC splitter compact devices used with test and measurement, R&D and other non-specific use (specialty applications) are forecast for double-digit annual growth during the 2010—2015 timeframe," said Stephen Montgomery, president at ElectroniCast.

In contrast, private enterprise and the majority of harsh environment applications tend to favor the use of fused biconical taper (FBT) over PLC splitters, Montgomery added.

This ElectroniCast study details the 2010 consumption and forecast to 2015 of PLC splitters in selected fiber-optic communication applications and according to the level of fabrication. There are actually three separate market forecasts:

  1. PLC splitter chips
  2. Compact devices
  3. Modules

The market forecast report is available immediately from ElectroniCast.
