Xelerated and Dune partner on 20-Gbit/sec Metro Ethernet applications

October 13, 2004 Concord, MA, and Sunnyvale, CA -- Xelerated, developer of network processors, and Dune Networks, manufacturer of switch fabric and traffic management solutions, have announced seamless interoperation between the X10q and FAP20V, providing what the companies claims is the most cost-effective system solution for Metro Ethernet.

By combining the Xelerated X10q network processor and its Metro Ethernet application software packages with the Dune SAND traffic management and switch fabric chipset, networking OEMs can build cost-effective, high-density, high-functionality switch/router systems with the flexibility to meet the changing requirements of the Metro Ethernet market, contend the companies.

"Xelerated's X10q is the only network processor available that can match the 20G throughput of our FAP20V, single-chip solution for traffic manager and switch fabric interface," explains Eyal Dagan, CEO of Dune Networks. "Together, we provide the densest and most cost-effective solution available today. Multiple Metro pizza-box design-wins have proven the cost competitiveness of this mutual offering," he adds.

The joint solution requires only two devices for 20-Gbits/sec full-duplex operation capable of supporting either 20�Gigabit Ethernet (GbE) ports or 2�10-GbE ports. This increase in density and the resulting cost savings has produced design-wins in applications such as Metro pizza-boxes as well as more traditional line-card applications in chassis-based switch/routers. Comparable solutions from other vendors currently require more than twice the number of devices, say Xelerated representatives.

"Our joint customers want to leverage their development investment across entire product families rather than point products," reports Johan Börje, CEO of Xelerated. "The scalability of Dune's SAND chipset combined with the flexibility of our X10q network processor allows us to easily meet this critical customer requirement."

The joint demo will be showcased in Xelerated's booth #510 at the Network Systems Design Conference exhibition in San Jose, October 20-21. It will feature Dune's Negev Reference System connecting to the Xelerated Reference Design Kit-II via SPI4.2 interfaces, running Xelerated's Metro Ethernet application package.
