May 27, 2004 Madrid, Spain -- R Cable, the fiber-optic cable telecom operator in Spain's Galicia region, has selected Nortel Networks to build an optical DWDM network, bringing improved multimedia capabilities to enterprise and residential customers.

The new network is intended to help address the growing demand and satisfy R's requirements for network reliability and scalability for a range of multimedia applications, including Internet access, cable TV and telephony to residential customers, and a full range of data and voice applications to enterprise customers.

The backbone project will link seven major cities in the four Galician provinces with broadband transmission capacity to improve the multimedia experience for its customers. It will also extend its current portfolio with new products and services to increase productivity and efficiency and to help R to reduce capital and operating costs.

R has deployed Nortel Networks Optical Line System 1600, an optical platform using DWDM to maximize the capacity available in each fiber up to 320 Gbits/sec per pair.

"As we are focused on continuing to improve services and technology for our customers, we rely upon Nortel Networks to be our strategic optical supplier," reports Julio Sánchez, director of network division, R Cable. "We have designed a new network infrastructure, based on Nortel Networks solutions, making R one of the most technologically advanced companies in Europe."
