Optical transport systems vendor Infinera (NASDAQ: INFN) has hired Stuart Elby, most recently vice president and chief technologist of Verizon Labs, to be senior vice president of cloud network strategy and technology. The hiring coincides with the formation of a cloud networks group within Infinera.
"As cloud services play a larger role in the telecommunications infrastructure, Infinera is committed to focusing on the specific requirements of cloud networks and delivering technologies that enable the continued evolution of this fundamental market shift," said Infinera CEO Tom Fallon via a press statement. "Dr. Elby brings invaluable industry experience that will help accelerate Infinera's ability to win in this market."
Elby has held a number of roles at Verizon. He has been intimately involved in technology and network architecture strategy at the service provider, including development and launch of cloud services platforms for Verizon Digital Media Services. He also managed the specification and design of several core services platforms, including cloud and API secure gateway platforms.
He also spoke at the press event that launched Infinera’s flagship DTN-X platform. While he did not endorse the DTN-X at the event, he did explain why a packet-optical transport platform with capabilities similar to the system’s might be desirable. Verizon has not deployed the DTN-X in its network, however.
"I am delighted to join the Infinera team," said Elby in the same statement. "As cloud services continue to grow, the importance of optimizing solutions for the cloud network market becomes a high growth opportunity and I am looking forward to leading this team at Infinera."
