Africa fiber system
AT&T Corp. has won full support of Africa`s mostly state-owned communications companies for a $2.6-billion undersea fiber-optic system known as Africa One. It consists of approximately 32,000 kilometers, or 19,875 miles, of fiber-optic cable that would encircle the continent. The project calls for fiber-optic cables to link all coastal cities from Cape Town to Cairo. In addition, undersea cable units of Alcatel Cable and AT&T plan to cooperate on the promotion, design, manufacture, supply and installation of the system, which is scheduled for completion in 1999.
