StarHub Pte Ltd. (Singapore), a joint venture of Singapore Technologies Telemedia, Singapore Power, Nippon Telegraph & Telephone Corp. (Tokyo), and British Telecom (London), selected Lucent Technologies Inc. (Murray Hill, NJ) to supply optical transmission and access equipment for a StarHub nationwide network. Following deregulation of Singapore`s telecommunications market, the consortium is investing about $1.5 billion over the next seven to 10 years on infrastructure for fixed-line and wireless services. Lucent`s multimillion-dollar contract is for phase one, up to the network rollout in April 2000, with a phased deployment option for eight years. StarHub expects to start commercial service in April 2000.
