1Q20 optical systems sales for data center interconnect jump 13% y-o-y: Dell'Oro

May 28, 2020
Ciena, Cisco, and Infinera benefited the most, the market research firm states in its most recent Optical Transport Quarterly Report.

Sales of optical transport systems for deployment in data center interconnect applications in the first three months of this year increased 13% over the year-ago quarter, according to Dell'Oro Group. Ciena, Cisco, and Infinera benefited the most, the market research firm states in its most recent Optical Transport Quarterly Report.

"Data center interconnect continued to be an important application for optical transport equipment, especially in times like this," commented Jimmy Yu, vice president at Dell'Oro Group. "While macroeconomic conditions will suffer this year due to the actions taken to contain the spread of COVID-19, we anticipate demand for data center connectivity will continue to rise as people rely more on cloud-based services."

The major of optical data center interconnect spending focused on metro links, according to Dell’Oro. Interest was strong in high-speed transport, leading to a sharp increase in support of 400-Gbps wavelengths.

Ciena, Cisco, and Infinera dominate the data center interconnect optical transport market, combining for more than 70% market share, the report states. Cisco and Infinera each saw their market share numbers grow 6% to 7% during the quarter versus the first quarter of 2019. Interest in 600G-capable disaggregated WDM systems helped account for this increase, the market research firm believes.

Dell'Oro’s Optical Transport Quarterly Report details the market with tables covering manufacturers' revenue, average selling prices, unit shipments (by speed including 100 Gbps, 200 Gbps, 400 Gbps, and 800 Gbps). The report tracks DWDM long haul, WDM metro, multiservice multiplexers (SONET/SDH), optical switch, optical packet platforms, data center interconnect (metro and long haul), and disaggregated WDM.
