After pandemic-related disappointments in the first quarter of this year, the overall broadband equipment space rebounded nicely in the second quarter of 2020, says Dell’Oro Group. The market research firm says in its most recent quarterly report that revenues in the broadband systems space grew to $3.3 billion, a 6% improvement over the year-ago quarter. Spending on PON equipment, particularly in the Europe, Middle East, and Africa (EMEA) region, led the way.

EMEA PON equipment revenues hit $876 million in the quarter, emblematic of an overall interest in fiber-based broadband access. PON equipment revenues climbed 20% year-on-year, while PON ONT shipments globally were up 17% year-on-year, according to Dell’Oro. "Fiber expansion projects continue to expand around the world, as evidenced by continued strong demand for OLT ports," explained Jeff Heynen, senior research director, broadband access and home networking at Dell’Oro. "The sustained fiber investments are a clear sign that providers realize just how critical premium residential broadband access is to their business."

DSL access concentrator port shipments also saw a healthy year-over-year jump of 7% in 2Q20, thanks to an increase in VDSL port shipments. However, the cable access concentrator space continued to decline, with revenues down 8% versus the year-ago quarter to $219 million. A slowdown in CCAP license purchases in North America proved the primary culprit.

Dell'Oro’s quarterly Broadband Access and Home Networking Quarterly Report provides an overview of the broadband access market with tables covering manufacturers' revenue, average selling prices, and port/unit shipments for cable, DSL, and PON equipment. Equipment covered includes Converged Cable Access Platforms (CCAPs) and Distributed Access Architectures (DAA); DSLAMs by technology, including ADSL/ADSL2+, G.SHDSL, VDSL, VDSL Profile 35b, and G.fast; PON optical line terminals (OLTs); cable, DSL, and PON CPE; and SOHO WLAN equipment, including mesh routers.
