Sales of broadband equipment set a revenue record in 2022, according to Dell’Oro Group. And PON sales again set the pace, rising for the fifth consecutive year, the market research firm states in its new 4Q 2022 Broadband Access and Home Networking quarterly report.

Worldwide broadband gear sales reached $19 billion last year, an increase of 17% year-over-year, says Dell’Oro. Revenue for PON OLTs and ONTs accounted for more than half that total, growing 25% year-on-year to reach $11.7 billion. XGS-PON OLT port shipments totaled 2.3 million worldwide as part of this wave.

“The focus on upgrading and expanding broadband access networks was a clear focus for operators around the world in 2022,” commented Jeff Heynen, vice president with Dell’Oro Group. “We expect broadband to remain a critical area of investment in 2023, as operators expand their footprint and increase the speeds and services they offer subscribers.”

Total cable access concentrator revenue grew 1%, to $1 billion, in 2022 as well. Remote PHY devices, Remote OLTs, and virtual CMTS platforms all enjoyed significant revenue gains as cable operators continue to expand their Distributed Access Architecture (DAA) and fiber deployments. (Dell’Oro separately announced plans to deliver a regular report on cable MSOs’ HFC upgrade initiatives beginning next month.)

Dell’Oro’s Broadband Access and Home Networking Quarterly Report provides an overview of the broadband access market with tables covering manufacturers’ revenue, average selling prices, and port/unit shipments for cable, DSL, and PON equipment. Covered equipment includes Converged Cable Access Platforms (CCAP) and DAA; Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexers (DSLAMs) by technology (VDSL, VDSL Profile 35b, and G.FAST); PON OLTs; cable, DSL, and PON CPE; and residential WLAN equipment, including mesh routers.
