Terabeam Corp., a developer of free space optics telecommunication equipment and a metro Ethernet service provider, is supplying its Fiberless Optics equipment and professional services to Utfors Bredband AB of Sweden. Utfors AB is a rapid-growth supplier of broadband-based communications services in the Nordic market. With that integration into a major carrier network, Terabeam signaled that its free space optics equipment and services are now available to telecommunications carriers worldwide.

Terabeam claims to be the first company to fully operationalize and integrate free space optics technology and services into a major carrier network to carry mission-critical applications for its business customers.

Terabeam has developed a technology that sends the same light of a fiber-optic cable through the air, rather than through a buried cable. Terabeam's equipment extends Utfors' fiber-optic network, with the same bandwidth, to areas not served by fiber optic cables. Terabeam monitors and maintains the Utfors free space optic links from its network operation center, known as the RROC (Rapid Response Operation Center), in Seattle, Wash.

The initial phase of Terabeam's integration into the Utfors network was completed with the connection of Utfors' first free space optics customer, Differ. Differ is northern Europe's management consultant firm committed to the development of great brands. Differ is connected to Utfors' network by a beam of invisible, eye-safe light transmitted by a Terabeam Fiberless Optics transceiver through a Differ office window.

The implementation is Terabeam's first with an international carrier.
