American Tower (NYSE: AMT) says its edge data center facility in Pittsburgh is now open for business and accepting customers. The 360-square-foot data center currently offers eight customer cabinets, 20 quarter-cabinet lockers, and three full cabinets, to accommodate up to 23 customers.
The new facility is the to sixth edge data center in American Tower’s U.S. portfolio. As with the other facilities, the Pittsburgh edge data center will offer critical power distribution, monitoring, security, and cooling to local customers in such industries as manufacturing, healthcare, and information technology, among others.
“The vast combination of industries in the Pittsburgh area that require increased network elasticity and lower latency make our newest facility an ideal location for an edge data center,” said Whitney Pesot, product manager, U.S. innovation for American Tower. “The increasing use of the Internet of Things (IoT) devices within the manufacturing and healthcare industries is creating more demand for fast connectivity closer to the edge. The city’s emerging artificial intelligence and robotics industry will also heavily rely on the low-latency environment edge facilities provide.”
