Infinera says it has supplied its Cloud Xpress data center interconnect platform to Yahoo! JAPAN. Use of the system will help enable the Japanese internet portal sites to accommodate growth in traffic demand from such cities as Tokyo and Osaka, Infinera says.

The systems house supplied the systems to Yahoo! JAPAN with the assistance of in-country partner ITOCHU Techno-Solutions Corp., which provides Yahoo! JAPAN with information technology solutions and data center maintenance services. Yahoo! JAPAN has deployed both the Cloud Xpress and Infinera XTM Series in its metro networks (see "Yahoo Japan taps Transmode WDM for data center interconnect"; Infinera bought Transmode in 2015).

"Yahoo! JAPAN's data centers house a large number of servers so both space and power are limited," said Miyuki Tsunekawa, who works within the Backbone, Site Operations Division at Yahoo! JAPAN. "The Infinera Cloud Xpress enables the easy deployment of 100-Gbps capacity in a compact solution with low power consumption, ideally suited for our data center environment."

Infinera recently introduced a new version of platform, the Cloud Xpress 2, which leverages the company's Infinite Capacity Engine (see "Infinera Cloud Xpress 2 sports Infinite Capacity Engine for data center interconnect"). However, the new system won't become generally available until the first quarter of 2017.
