Business Sweden said Facebook has announced plans to expand its Luleå, Sweden campus to over 100,000 m2 (1 million square feet) with the addition of a third data center (confirmed via the Luleå campus's very own Facebook page). Business Sweden said Facebook has announced plans to expand its Luleå, Sweden campus to over 100,000 m2 (1 million square feet) with the addition of a third data center (news confirmed via the Luleå campus's very own Facebook page). The nearly 50,000 m2data center will be operational in 2021, says Business Sweden.

In 2011, Facebook established the data center in Sweden. Facebook has invested $1.2 U.S. billion in the Luleå data centersince then, says Business Sweden.

The data center industry in Sweden is currently growing at approximately 14% annually and will likely employ 30,000 people by 2025, Business Sweden estimates. With an established, secure infrastructure, Sweden's renewable energy production, potential for a zero-carbon footprint, low power costs, and fiber connectivity make it an ideal location for operating large-scale data centers, asserts Business Sweden.

In addition to Facebook's expansion, Amazon Web Services is also in the process of finalizing the construction of three data centers in the Stockholm region, and work on the 109 ha land plot Google acquired to prepare for a possible data center project continues.

"Data center investors are attracted to Sweden's robust power grid, our fiber-optic network, and renewable energy," said Tomas Sokolnicki. "After the cost of electricity for data centers was dramatically lowered last year, interest from all kinds of data center operators, from high performance computing to colocation, has reached an all-time high."
