IX Australia deploys 100-Gbps open line system from Smartoptics

Smartoptics says it has provided its DCP-M40 Open Line System and pluggable DWDM QSFP28 PAM4 optical transceivers to Internet Exchange Australia (IX Australia). The internet exchange will use the platforms and optical modules for data center interconnect among its metro locations in Sydney. Independent Data Solutions (IDS) aided in the deployment and will manage after-sale services.

Smartoptics says it has provided its DCP-M40 Open Line System and pluggable DWDM QSFP28 PAM4 optical transceivers to Internet Exchange Australia (IX Australia). The internet exchange will use the platforms and optical modules for data center interconnect among its metro locations in Sydney. IX Australia, established in 1997 by the Internet Association of Australia Inc. (formally the Western Australian Internet Association Inc.), operates five peering points throughout the country accessed by major metropolitan data centers. With network demands growing, IX Australia has upgraded its data center interconnect infrastructure to enable as much as 40 wavelengths of 100 Gbps per fiber pair. The open line systems support transmission over distances in excess of 50 km; new channels can be enabled in an automated fashion, says Smartoptics.

The DCP-M40 consumes a maximum 45 W in a 1RU package. It also leverages Inphi’s COLORZ PAM4 transceiver technology to deliver 100 Gbps without the use of coherent transmission technology.

“We are delighted to have been able to upgrade our network, based on the very modern Extreme 870, so easily and significantly increase available capacity at the lowest possible cost,” said Joe Wooller, technical manager at IX Australia. “We are now able to easily scale service flexibility and capacity just by adding new transceivers to our switches. The line system automation handles everything else, no complex provision needed. As demand on our network grows, we need the flexibility to handle adding new capacity when it is needed with no drama.”
