Windstream fiber network expansion reaches about 100,000 new locations in 2020 first half

July 21, 2020
The multi-year effort will see the company invest what it termed “billions of capital” to reach “millions of households.”

Kinetic by Windstream, the service provider’s broadband services arm, says it has enabled approximately 100,000 new premises with gigabit-capable services thanks to a fiber network expansion effort. The multi-year effort will see the company invest what it termed “billions of capital” to reach “millions of households.” The fiber roll out helped the company achieve its ninth consecutive quarter of broadband subscriber growth.

This year’s first half has seen Kinetic by Windstream add more than 40,000 net new broadband subscribers. “Kinetic by Windstream is stronger than ever,” said Jeff Small, president of the company’s consumer and small and midsize business segment. “Our fiber investments are accelerating Kinetic’s broadband subscriber growth and equipping our rural communities to take advantage of greater opportunities to work from home, experience virtual learning, and enjoy premium entertainment.”

The company notes that its fiber network had little difficulty keeping pace with changing customer requirements caused by work-from-home efforts to combat the spread of COVID-19. Bandwidth demands rose more than 30 percent in March, Kinetic by Windstream noted. In addition to residential services, the company also delivers such business-centric offerings as SD-WAN and OfficeSuite UC cloud-based voice and collaboration.

The company also made significant investments in fiber-enabled broadband in 2019 (see "Windstream touts 2019 Kinetic Internet FTTP milestones").
