Verizon, Calix demo 34 Gbps via bonded NG-PON2 channels

The service provider pointed toward the bonded transmission’s ability to meet the needs of small and mid-size business customers at some point in the future.

Verizon and NG-PON2 technology partner Calix say they have demonstrated 34 Gbps transmission via bonded channels delivered to a prototype NG-PON2 optical network terminal (ONT). The demonstration took place at the Verizon Innovation Center in Waltham, MA. The service provider pointed toward the bonded transmission’s ability to meet the needs of small and mid-size business customers at some point in the future. However, the two companies did not say how close the technology is to fielding.

NG-PON2 is a multiwavelength TDM-based transmission technology. Initial NG-PON2 systems support four wavelengths of 10 Gbps each in both upstream and downstream directions. The capacity of the individual wavelengths can be combined – or “bonded” – to deliver more than 10 Gbps to a particular passive network node or directly to a network endpoint. In this instance, Verizon and Calix bonded all four wavelengths to achieve the 34 Gbps total. Verizon selected an Ericsson/Calix team and ADTRAN as its primary NG-PON2 suppliers and has deployed Calix technology in at least one field application (see Verizon to deploy Calix AXOS E9-2 this quarter as part of NG-PON2 rollout).

With new services becoming increasingly bandwidth-intensive, our work with Verizon has demonstrated that AXOS systems leveraging NG-PON2 will provide the future-proof connectivity needed to meet these demands.”
