ADTRAN adds OLTs, ONTs, switch to SDX line for software-defined access networks

ADTRAN, Inc. (NASDAQ:ADTN) has expanded its SDX series of open, disaggregated PON systems for software-defined access (SD-Access) PON infrastructures. The additions, which include new optical line terminals (OLTs), micro optical network terminals (ONTs), and a multi-terabit aggregation switch, enables operators to align their networks with SDN-Enabled Broadband Access (SEBA) from the Open Networking Foundation (ONF) and CloudCO from the Broadband Forum (BBF) without sacrificing carrier-grade features or form factors, the company states.

The new SDX elements include:

  • The ADTRAN SDX 6320 Combo PON OLT, a virtual OLT that leverages the company’s new Combo PON functionality. Combo PON integrates GPON and XGS-PON capabilities into a single module. The OLTs supports deployment from central offices/exchanges and remote cabinets.
  • The ADTRAN SDX 6312 Sealed Combo PON OLT offers the features of the 6320 in a passively cooled, pole/strand-mount form factor.
  • The ADTRAN SDX 620 series of 10G micro ONTs supports cost-effective and elegant multi-gigabit service delivery in mass-market residential and enterprise service deployments.
  • The ADTRAN SDX 8305, a 2-Tbps Ethernet aggregation switch that supports Nx100GbE connectivity in traditional central office/exchange locations.

As with the rest of the ADTRAN SDX series, the new programmable network elements natively support such modern interfaces and data models as NETCONF/YANG. Thus, they can be managed by any open access domain SDN controller and orchestrator or the ADTRAN Mosaic Cloud Platform. ADTRAN notes it is supplying elements of its SDX portfolio and Mosaic Cloud Platform to such Tier 1 operators in the U.S. and Europe, including recently announced awards from Openreach in the UK and Deutsche Telekom in Germany (see "Openreach to deploy ADTRAN SDX OLTs for FTTP" and "Deutsche Telekom taps ADTRAN for Access 4.0 OLT network deployments").

“Tier 1 carriers are modernizing their access networks and adopting software-defined access solutions that will streamline operations for the decades to come,” said Julie Kunstler, Omdia’s senior principal analyst, broadband infrastructure, via an ADTRAN press release. “Software-defined access architectures provide carriers with service agility capabilities along with support for faster integration of next-gen technologies.”
