ADTRAN Combo PON provides GPON/XGS-PON support on same distribution network

ADTRAN, Inc. (NASDAQ:ADTN) has introduced Combo PON, the ability to support both GPON and XGS-PON on the same optical distribution network. Combo PON is rolling out on ADTRAN’s Total Access 5000 (TA5000) fiber access platform as well as some elements of its latest SDX series (see “ADTRAN adds OLTs, ONTs, switch to SDX line for software-defined access networks”).

The company says the use of Combo PON modules in its optical line terminals (OLTs) enables space savings of 75%, capex savings of 50%, and a 66% reduction in power in comparison with operating with two discrete GPON and XGS-PON OLT modules. The TA5000 will support an eight-port Combo PON module, which ADTRAN asserts will make the platform the highest density 10G PON system available in the U.S.

Use of Combo PON also streamlines the evolution from GPON to XGS-PON, ADTRAN states. “Service providers all over the world need to cost-effectively deploy high-capacity, scalable full-fiber networks supporting consumer cloud, remote worker, IoT and enterprise applications,” commented Javier Lopez, ADTRAN’s director of product management for broadband access. “We understand that both established and emerging service providers are making network decisions with decade-long implications. We believe we are adding new capabilities, like Combo PON and 100G interfaces, at the right time to help operators achieve their future network goals.”
