Clarksville, TN, gets 1-Gbps FTTH via Zhone ONTs

July 15, 2013
FTTx equipment developer Zhone Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: ZHNE) says that Clarksville Department of Electricity Lightband (CDE) in Clarksville, TN (yes, that Clarksville) will use its zNID optical network terminals (ONTs) to supply 1-Gbps Internet services.

FTTx equipment developer Zhone Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: ZHNE) says that Clarksville Department of Electricity Lightband (CDE) in Clarksville, TN (yes, that Clarksville) will use its zNID optical network terminals (ONTs) to supply 1-Gbps Internet services.

CDE launched a fiber to the home (FTTH) deployment in 2007 based on Active Ethernet technology (see “Clarksville, TN, hops aboard FTTH”). Its fiber-optic network runs 1000 miles, including all of the 100 sq miles within Clarksville’s city limits. CDE serves approximately 64,000 electric customers and 15,000 broadband customers. The new ONTs will enable the utility to support 1-Gbps services as well as automated electric meter reading.

"Zhone's industry expertise and sophisticated equipment made triple-play services over Active Ethernet possible for CDE," said Brian Taylor, superintendent at CDE. "With the successful deployment of our 1-gig Internet services, CDE has improved service value and increased resources available to its customers while still providing reasonably priced services."

"Zhone's products gave CDE the ability to expand its service offerings and bring more reliability to its subscribers," said Brian Caskey, chief marketing officer at Zhone Technologies. "Zhone has helped CDE to update its ONT infrastructure to increase its broadband speed to meet the higher bandwidth demands of consumers."
