Alcatel, Paris, has created a Brazilian subsidiary, Alcatel Cable do Brasil, which will produce wire and cable in Barueri, Sao Paulo. With investments of $6 million to $7 million, the company will initially make copper cables. After an additional investment of $4 million, the company anticipates producing fiber-optic cables. Estimates for 1998 sales are $10 million. About half of the predicted future turnover is expected to come from Brazil, with the other half from exports to the Mercosur trade block.
