OCTOBER 18, 2006 -- MRV Communications (search MRV) has introduced the OptiSwitch 900, a series of compact, carrier-class Metro Ethernet demarcation devices designed to deliver managed Fast Ethernet or Gigabit Ethernet carrier services with advanced Service Level Agreements (SLAs) for network demarcation.
The OS900 series is compliant with the Metro Ethernet Forum (search Metro Ethernet Forum) services. According to company representatives, it successfully passed the traffic management MEF 14 certification for compliance with all three services defined for Metro Ethernet, including Ethernet Private Line (EPL), Ethernet Virtual Private Line (EVPL) and Ethernet LAN (E-LAN).
The OS900 is optimized to bring cost-effective VLAN-cross-connect, enhanced Layer 2 and Layer 3 Ethernet switching, and intelligent traffic management to network demarcation, enabling carriers to provision new Gigabit services on-demand with automated traffic management using a class-of-service (CoS)-aware rate limit to dynamically reuse bandwidth profiles in real-time. Additionally, the OS900 allows for the future extension of an MPLS domain to the demarcation point via the tunneling of layer 2 pseudowire VPNs or hierarchical virtual private LAN services (H-VPLS) for MTUs, contends the company.
The OS900 demarcation series is equipped with the optimal port-count of Gigabit Ethernet customer-facing and network-facing ports. MRV says its also features 10K jumbo frames transmission, 802.3ad provider bridging (QinQ), 50-msec service protection, and advanced automated device management through operations, administration and maintenance (OAM). These features help carriers isolate faults in the network, determining if the problem is on the carrier's or the customer's side of a connection.
The OS900 series is a compact system (only 1U-high and 8.45 inches wide) giving carriers the option to mount two per rack for optimal dual homing protected services, says MRV. The OS900 demarcation series currently comprises two models: the OS910 and the OS912.
The OS910 has eight 10/100/1000 Ethernet ports for connecting to customer networks and two SFP slots. The SFP pluggable optics offers versatile connectivity, supporting either Fast Ethernet or Gigabit Ethernet optical connectivity, including single fiber and WDM fiber-optic connections. The OS912 offers two additional optical ports.
"Through MRV'sIOS900 Ethernet Demarcation system, we have answered the Carriers' demands for a means to address the growing customer demand for managed Gigabit Ethernet services," contends Noam Lotan, MRV president and CEO. "The introduction of the OS900 series to premium customers was easy, thanks to the OS900's ability to create new revenue streams for carriers by offering intelligent L2VPNs and L3VPNs Gigabit demarcation services together with leading management and provision capabilities, enabling the carrier to provide next-generation service on demand."
To provide enhanced OAM and service capabilities, the OS900 Metro Demarcation technologies include advanced real-time fiber performance monitoring on the fiber network side and cable testing on the user UNI interfaces, with performance and SLA monitoring; < 50-msec protection; hardware-based multilayer QoS protection to protect the service and the device; remote loopback on an interface level or specific VLAN; VLAN-based remote sniffer; and simplified service provisioning with CoS-aware rate limit to dynamically reuse bandwidth profiles, reports the company.
The OS900 Ethernet Demarcation is available immediately from MRV's networkUof resellers worldwide.
